Sailing canoes in Micronesia
The ancestors of the Micronesians discovered and settled the tiny, far-strewn islands with sailing canoes, but nowadays islanders buzz around with outboards and have forgotten the art of navigation. On Ifalik the villagers still use their large canoes to go out fishing and in settled conditions they sometimes sail 35 nm to Woleai or even 80 nm to neighbouring Elato! Repairs are done in precision work with simple tools.
